Books & manuscripts

Appraising old books. Printing, binding, and rarity.

First editions, incunabula, and special publications — have them valued.

Valuing books

An old book is not automatically valuable.

The value of old books depends on the printing (first edition vs. reprint), the binding (original vs. rebound), condition, and rarity. A Bible from 1850 in poor condition is rarely valuable — a first edition of an important work can be worth thousands.

AntiqBot analyses your book based on photos of the title page, binding, and any special features. The system identifies the edition and provides an initial value indication.

With books, the title page is the starting point. That is where you find printer, year, and edition.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about book appraisal.

How do I tell if it is a first edition?

The title page and colophon contain clues. AntiqBot analyses this information and provides an indication.

Are all old Bibles valuable?

No. Bibles were printed in huge quantities. Only very early or specially illustrated copies have significant value.
